View Full Version : This is Serious...Are women's hose safe?

I'm being serious here.

I need to cover all those little spaces in back of a canopy between the heater and all the other stuff. Usually I end up using a lot of leftover cutouts from other tanks, filter floss, or I butcher an old net.

What about cutting up some women's hose? It is a fine net material and I can replace it each time my wife gets a run. Question, is it safe? :emb:

It should be perfectly fine, some people use those to cover the intake of their filters and such.

Hi,
Women's nylons were recommended to me to use as a carbon filter at one point also. My LFS was out of my carbon filter for a period of time. They said to use the lose carbon in a pair of nylons. Just another thought.

I use it to start a new tank by filling a leg with old gravel and filter pad from an established setup and letting it soak for a few days. Just dont let any hang over the side because it will act like a wick and drip water onto the floor...:(
Not the prettiest tank deco out there but it sure jump starts the cycling process.

Rinse thorougly to make absolutely sure they have no soap residue

And the fish would need years of psychotherapy. :joke:

For Snafu....using nylon to help cycle a tank, sounds interesting. So you just place the nylon stuffed with estabished gravel right into the new tank and let it sit there? For how many days? Does doing so eliminate the use of bottoled ammonia for the fishless cycle? Or does the established gravel sac just add on to the regular fishless cycling process? Thanks,
mt_marcy!

You would still need the ammonia, the gravel sac would just contain bacteria. That is a good idea if you have different colors of gravel and don't want to mix them. You would still get the bacteria and once the tank cycled you would remove the sack.

Thanks for the advice.

Try plastic gutter guard,
Gutter guard is to aquariums what duct tape is to a garage.

If it means what I think it means, the poster is saying to do your own research and when it comes to repeatitive subjects, LOOK THEM UP! ;)

I agree with Cearbhaill's signature all the way... it would save our fingers from lots of typing!

I found the perfect thing for covering up those holes and weird spots after finding my bulldog pleco happily munching away on the inside of my filter.
It's called plastic canvas, you can get it in any craft store. It's a plastic sheet that has a whole bunch of holes in it to form a grid. It cuts easily and is fairly flexible. I made a filter opening guard, for the intake when I had to take it off to hatch the cory eggs that were attatched to it, I used fishing line to sew it. The other guard is slotted into the opening of the overflow on the filter, it's an open mesh so the water flows through it and the bulldog doesn't. I also used it to cover up the gaps around the top of the heater where it hangs over the edge. I'm using the rest of the 12x14 inch sheet to make some cory hides for the tank, you can also use aquarium sealant to build with it. If it's cut right, you don't have to weight it, it just slides into place and kind of locks onto the edge of the filter. I'll see if I can get a decent picture of the hides when they are done. It's an inert plastic and doesn't harm the fish or the water quality at all, I did rinse it well before using it though.

Thanks everyone for some great ideas and suggestions. Just don't tell my wife why she is short on nylons! :)
