07-08-2004, 9:11 AM
ok, the song was recorded and signed in 1978 and released in 79......... the song was a club hit and considered a cult classic and was considered "disco" but the band wasn't solely a "disco" band.
:D
here's another part....
Poppy and the family left the dirty streets
to find a quiet place overseas
and year after year, the kid has to hear
the do's, the don'ts and the dear's...
and when she's 10 year's old,
she digs that rock and roll
but Poppy bans it from the home
Papa was a rolling stone? If I'm right, let me know and I'll think of a lyric.

Just think, you'd be AC's reigning Smilie, and Music Trivia Queen!
Of course, with that kind of notoriety you'd probably get all snobbish and no longer consort with the rest of us rabble. Probably go off and start your own elitist forum board and not even invite us (well, maybe Tyler718). The rest of us would be left here catching an occasional laugh from something GEL finds in her e-mail box, or pondering another of 125gJoe's alien posts. But that's alright. We'll survive.
So go ahead. Win the darn game. See if care. :sad :sad :sad

ok, the song sparked some controversy around these parts because of the lyrics and have been changed slightly to cut out the racial ideas they present.... another FCC thing. The song is on the soundtrack of the Summer of Sam..... it is a sad song that has a mountain of a meaning in my opinion, and for that reason is still one of my favorites:
Machines - There But for the Grace of God
Carlos and Carmen Vidal just had a child
A lovely girl with a crooked smile...
Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit
For a kid to grow up in....
Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away
With no blacks, no Jews and no gays!
There but for the grace of God... go I
Poppy and the family left the dirty streets
To find a quiet place overseas.....
And year after year the kid has to hear
The do's the don'ts and the dears.....
And when she's ten years old she digs that rock 'n' roll
But Poppy bans it from home!
There but for the grace of God... go I
Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak
Popping pills and smoking weed....
And when she's sweet sixteen
she packs her things and leaves...
With a man she met on the street...

It was very cool. I'm sure that there's not too many original members in any of those bands, but they still all put on great shows. The "Roswell Incident" occurred in early July of 1947, so the city goes all out with a combination Independence Day/UFO Incident festival and tries to have something to please everybody.
In addition to the above mentioned Friday night "oldies" show, there was a Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lacy J. Dalton show on Saturday, and a free Tex-Mex concert followed by fireworks on Sunday.
That's all in addition to a parade, alien costume contest, "alien run" races, etc. For this part of the country it's a pretty neat event.

Rolling Down the Highway, BTO
Takes through the sky like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover?
All your life you've never seen a woman
Taken by the wind

Rhiannon - Fleetwood Mac (awesome choice Tara)
Every once in a while I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
A girl with those eyes
Could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying

Think of Laura - Christopher Cross
This time you've got nothing to lose.
You can take it, you can leave it, whatever you choose.
I won't hold back anything and I'll walk a way a fool or a king.
Some love is just a lie of the mind.
It's make believe until its only a matter of time.

Matter of Trust, Billy Joel
(Thanks Sensei!!)
Remember them basement parties
your brother’s karate
The all day rock and roll shows
The homesick blues and radical views
Haven’t left a mark on you

A Matter of Trust - Billy Joel
By the way, music trivia buffs, Christopher Cross wrote "Think of Laura" in honor of a young woman he met at the Eastover Estate resort in Lenox, Massachusetts. My maternal grandfather grew up on the estate as his father was the estate's caretaker.
Here's my next offering.
Oh, fun ain't easy if it ain't free
Too many people got a hold on me
But i know something that they don't know
I know a woman in New Mexico

Worse Comes to Worst, Billy Joel - You really reached down into the Joel vault for that one... I haven't heard that in probably 5 or 6 years!!
Eat meat on friday that’s alright
Even like steak on a saturday night
I can b!tch the best at your social do’s
I get high in the evening sniffing pots of glue
edited for a swear word that I didn't think was a swear word, considering pissed is used in a thread title in general freshwater!!

Elton John - B*tch is Back.... excellent one Tara!!
Loneliness was tough, the toughest role you ever played.
Hollywood created a superstar and pain was the price you paid.
Even when you died, oh, the press still hounded you,
all the papers had to say was that Marilyn was found in the nude.

Faithfully - Journey (One of my wife's favorite bands - I'd swear Tara's been poking around our CD jukebox) ;)
Whatever happened to all this season's losers of the year?
Ev'ry time I got to thinking, where'd they disappear?
When I woke up, Mom and Dad are rolling on the couch.
Rolling numbers, rock and rolling, got my Kiss records out.

Warrant - Surrender (today is full of goodies)
One of these early mornings, oh, you gonna be wiping your weeping eyes.
I bought you a brand new mustang 'bout nineteen sixty five
Now you come around signifying a woman, you don't wanna let me ride.

I've never heard the Warrant version, I'm only familiar with Cheap Trick's version, but, ok.
Yours is Mustang Sally and it's been recorded by a bunch of groups. I even heard it at the oldies concert I mentioned earlier in the thread.
Here's my offering.
Not long now till the ultimate experiment
He's breaking all the rules
He wants to cure all matter of imbalance
In this world of fools

Dr. Heckell and Mr. Jive - Men At Work
(I hate this band with a passion... my hubby loves them though, that's the only way that I'd know this song!!!)
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail

Rock the Casbah - The Clash (hehehe, I uded to love them too)
The powers that be that force us to live like we do
bring me to my knees when I see what they've done to you
but I'll die as I stand here today, knowing that deep in my heart
they'll fall to ruin one day for making us part.

Chain Gang, the Pretenders
story time:
My husband and I got married in Las Vegas, July 1999... guess who we saw at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino the night we got married... yep, the Pretenders. They were very good, and we were very close to the stage (2nd row), so my husband was in heaven (he loves Chrissy hynde (sp))... I, on the other hand, was not too thrilled to go to see the Pretenders on the night of my wedding, but I figured what the heck... they didn't sing the only other song that I know by them though - I don't know the name of it, but it goes "Gonna use my arms, gonna use my legs, gonna use my style" blah blah blah... so needless to say I was a little disappointed. But considering that I only knew 2 of their songs, it was a good show.
story time over, hehe!
My new offering:
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free

She was the color of the Indian summer
And we shared the hours without number
Until one day when the sky turned dark
And the winds grew wild

Thunder Island by Jay Ferber (???)... I have the Miracle soundtrack (at home) and it's on there....
Thursday morning was a hot flash factor
her face still focused in my mind
Test-strip proof-sheet love is hard to find
Friday night we'll dance the spotlight grind
Thunder Island, but by Jay Ferguson.
I'd like to break in (although I thought this game was over pages ago) but you certainly knew the song, so I guess it's still yours Dwayne.
