Im thinking about getting loaches for my 20 gal tank. Right now I have 1 angel fish, 2 mollies, 2 scissor tails, and 3 black tetras. Everything is real nice and peaceful..

However, a while back I bought live plants and introduced snails to my tank. I took the plants out because it was too much of a pain to deal with them, and ever since the snails have been multiplying. Now I have tons of little snails that come out in the dark, sticking to the glass, rocks, everything! Also, I have been getting a nasty green/black algae that sticks to my rocks, gravel, fake plants, and glass.

I hear loaches eat both the algae and snails. What I need to know is if this is true, what kind of loach I should get, and how many? Will I need to get any special food to feed them?

My only concern is that adding more fish will throw off the balance, as most of my fish have become quite large(over 1 year old on most of them) and I dont want to overcrowd the tank.

Thanks

One way to get rid of snails is to put an algae wafer in a jar, tip it on its side and then leave it. After a while the snails will attack it and you can just take the jar out and have escargot. Or you could just squish them with your finger. Live plants will provide competition over nutrients for the algae =less algae growth. Or you could get some algae eating fishies. Some loaches will eat snails, others will not. Some loaches, like the kuhli loach for example will grow to a near 3 inches in length, others (like the clown loach) can grow at a slow pace to around 1 foot in length! Most people will tell you that for the majority, most species grow slow and steadily... but many need much more than 20 gallons.

Getting back to that Clown Loach, many have them in 55-100 gallon aquariums. This is a common practice, and 20 gallons wouldn't work for this fish.

Here is a great link to a whole bunch of loaches, the website is all about loaches... and they have about every profile on loaches that you could think of!

I think Im going to try and find a clown loach. Just one. Otherwise my tank will be too crowded. It seems like the right kind of loach for what I want it for, and will make a nice colorful addition to my tank.

Ermmm... the clown loach is the one that slowly (but surely) can reach a foot in length. Also, this loach likes to be in groups so one might not be entirely satisfied by himself. I dont know, I hate to see you scrambling to get a larger aquarium, or to have to upgrade just for this fish... but in 20 gallons, he won't thrive as he should. :(

Well, we'll just have to see how he does. If he gets too long, I guess ill just have to get rid of him. I'm also planning on getting rid of my fish tank next year. Going up to college, I wont be able to take care of it, and my parents dont wanna deal with it.
