I have seen it mentioned that people add iodine to help their shrimp molt better in fresh water. Being realitivly cheap but also curious I was wondering if the iodine in table salt (potassium iodide) would work in this situation. And would the remaining potassium help plants?

Presumably yes to both questions.

But I'd be interested in hearing some feedback from more experienced shrimp keepers. I like ghost shrimp, they're durn cool to watch, and a lot cheaper than amanos, but the last time I bought 5 and only 1 survived, making the one I have the same price as an amono shrimp.

edit: there's not a lot of iodide in table salt though. you'd probably have to buy potassium iodide, or some more concentrated source.

Thanks. Yeah, I didn't think there was a lot of iodine in it but compared to the none I was adding it might be helpful. I will start adding a little to the tank ( a 5 gallon planted tank with a betta) over the next little while and see if I notice anything going on in there).

I've been using the Kent iodine for my ghost and amanos for a few months now. It was something like $7 for the bottle but since I only use 6-8 drops at every water change it should last quite some time.

Happychem, I was losing ghost shrimp like crazy until i started dosing iodine. Once that started I haven't lost one. The ghosts in there now are easily 4-5 months old.

Well my ammano have been going strong for 6 months now. There has been one molt that I noticed.

Happychem, do you know if Kent products are available around these parts or is it a mail order thing only for us?

I haven't seen any. All the pond products I've seen are Laguna, which doesn't seem to have an equivalent. Aqua Creations has a bunch of Seachem stuff, probably some of the flourish line as well. Although truth be told, I haven't really been looking for iodine until now. Excellent, an exceuse to go to Aqua Creations!

I'll be out at Bayers Lake this weekend, I'll check out Home Depot and Kent to see if they have any Kent products... (you'd think that Kent would be a good place to look  !)

what about actual iodine that some people use for wounds?

could that be put in there? its the same thing isnt it? and can be found at grocery stores.. probably a lot cheaper.

I think the Kent Iodine will more likely be found in the salt water part of your fish store. Home Depot I don’t think will have any thing that’s made for a fish tank but will have some stuff for the ponds. If you can’t find it at your LFS look for a salt water store or ask to see if they will get some in for you.

I think your best bet would be to make an order off the net with the cheaper prices on that type of stuff. Don’t for get your filter pads, test kits, and any other chemicals you use. Most of that stuff is so much cheaper off the net and I get most of my stuff in 2 days if you call in the morning.
