To plenum or not to plenum? Planning for a 4" to 6" DSB in an AGA 125 soon-to-be reef... What are your experiences with adding a plenum under the DSB?

Currently, I have egg crate in the tank directly on the glass bottom with fiberglass screen on top of the egg crate to keep the sand (Southdown) from falling inside the egg crate and thus creating 1/2" bricks of sand in the egg crate. (I have not added any sand or water yet).

A) Is this a good plan?
B) Should I lift the egg crate up an inch or two with PVC to create a deeper plenum or is 1/2" enough?

Thanks.

I wouldn't bother with a plenum. Six inches of sand directly on the tank bottom is fine. Be sure to seed the sandbed with a good array of fauna and you'll be all set.

my readings suggest that it works without though I am not completly dismissing the plenum principle... There is a very good theoritical reason for using a plenum but I am yet to see a proof that it is actually better or otherwise
