Bacterial infections (whitespot etc)

Quick question if a tank has had a bacterial infection in it (for example whitespot) once all the infected fish have died and the tank is empty, Is the desease still present or not

ie, does bacterial/whitespot type infections need fish(hosts) to survive (much like FLU needs us)????

FYI: Ich, or whitespot disease, is a protozoan infection not bacterial. And yes, after it's life cycle runs out without a host it will die.
