I need approximately a metric buttload of foam/sponge. I'm building a filter inside an unused 10ga. tank and making a series of trays that hold the filter media. This is as much for my own benefit as for the fish's. Anyway, I'd like some 20ppi and some 30ppi open-cell sponge in pieces big enough to span the smallest part of the aquarium (10x12ish?). The only sponge I can find specifically for aquarium filters is in small blocks or pads and not as cheap as I'd hoped. Is suitable sponge available labeled for some other use? Might I find something at a pool suply store? Any tips are welcome.

pond places have big foam pads, and BigAl's has 3"x5"x12" sponge, Ebay or Aquabid often has rolls of filter media. I got a roll, 1'x 6 or 8' for ~$8.
search on pond filter media and you will find some. Also wet/dry media.

Thanks a lot. I found the 3x5x12 sponge block as well as a 3/4x11x12 sponge pad at Big Al's. I must be blind, senile, or both because I looked at Big Al's yesterday and couldn't find anything suitable. It's been a long week. :)

I'm checking my pocket conversion guide, they didn't put that one in there.

A 'butt' or 'buttload' is a liquid volume measurement equal to about 126 US gallons (http://www.footrule.com/1/fixed/alphlist.htm?lg=&bv=9&nv=12&rg=1&ad=36&jt=null&sa=null&sr=homepage&ac=0&ul=b). A metric buttload, then, would equal about 477 liters.
In any case, you'll need a much larger tank than 10 g. to store your buttload of foam.
