Hey, I have a really big pond that I'm getting ready to stock. it's been set up for 2 or 3 years now and is finally getting a pretty diverse enough collection of plant and animal life I think it could support a fish population.
Anybody know where to get about 1-2,000 fathead minnows relatively inexpensively in the northwest?
I tried to contact my local fish and game office but no response.
Also, I plan to stock yellow perch as from what I have read these are the best fish for the conditions, namely 6 inches to a foot of ice in the winter and 70-77 degrees in the summer. Also, as perch thrive in small lakes around here, I figured I could catch about 20 each year or two, rotating from different lakes, to keep the gene pool diverse. Initially though, I will require several hundred perch. anybody know where to get these?
Also, there is a BIG thermocline in the water. below about 3-4 feet deep in the summer, the water temp drops off probably 15 degrees. this is because it's fed by a small spring that flows through some bog plants only about 100 feet before getting to the pond, so it's still pretty cold. I plan to install a wind powered aerator to break this up and increase circulation. would it be ok to stock the minnows this year without doing that, though, to get them growing and multiplying as a food source for the perch?
Thanks in advance for your help.
