Hello, I recently started to set up my first community tank, so far today I bought a black mollie pair (I am going to get another female to reduce mating stress), and an albino red fin shark. The tank is 29g and the filter is an aquaclear 500. I need ideas on what other fish to add to the tank, I am on a low budget so nothing too fancy please.

Um... I dont kno... BTW this is not my first tank, just my first community tank.

I dont want to be like everyone else and have a tetra community!

okay I see no one is responding to me so lets try this, anyone know of any other topics they can refer me to so I can start picking out more fish

mollies leave you with lots of options, the shark could limit the additions. platies do well with mollies and give you just as many color options, rasboras, danio's, possibly even barbs of some sort. KYle

The albino red finned shark is probably an albino rainbow shark, they're very cool!!

You could get some cories for the bottom of the tank, a few more mollies, zebra danios are fun/zippy fish!. I wouldn't recommend tiger barbs, they would probably harrass your mollies (they're fin nippers)... but maybe some cherry barbs, they're so pretty.

Danios and rasporas are always fun to watch IMO and a very nice addition to most tanks.

Dwarf neon rainbows, rosy or cherry barbs, tetras or harlequin rasboras will all look good in a small school. You could try a pair of dwarf cichlids like rams or kribs. Other livebearers like platies, guppies, swords, and variatus. Dwarf or honey gouramies. Smaller killiefish or kuhli loaches will add an interesting look.

i don't know if they'll go well with your current fish but gourami's are really cool, pretty, cheap fish with lots of personality especially when you put them with other fish. i have two in my tank 55g and they're my favorites aside from my pictus cats.

Thankyou to everyone who replied, As soon as I get some money (and my tank cycle finishes) I am thinking of some cories for the bottom, a gourami pair I saw in the petshop, they were adroable.

Besides that I will talk to my fish man when I get to the shop. Me and him are good friends (seeing as I go there every week for turtle food)

again thanks for the advice

Can I make a suggestion? I have a group of fish that you might be interested in...

3 Mollies(what you began with)
2 assorted platies
2 Guppies
1 Red fin shark(you also began with this)

This should fill your tank with color and beauty. If you like this idea, then make sure you get someone else's OK b4 you get these, as I know alot about fish, but am only a newbie.

hcgirl's recommendations would be perfect for your 29 gallon tank!

Trios, 1 male and 2 female, are often the best mix for livebearers like guppies, mollies and platies. That mix is good but the lone female guppy and platy will get chased a lot. Start making plans for all of the babies.

May I ask if this tank has been cycled?

At the beginning of the post you said you set it up that day and added fish... did you seed the tank or just put all new gravel, equipment, etc in and then add fish?

He said the tank isn't cycled yet and is waiting til it is to add more fish.

Remember though, that with each additional fish your tank will begin a new mini cycle. So I would add new fish at a max of 2 every couple of weeks. This will give you plenty of time to get used to how the new fish are before adding new ones and ideally the tank will reach a complete cycle before the next group.

everything in the tank is old, from a previous tank. I had it sitting a week before adding fish, plus my boyfriend bought me fishies and put them in the tank today... ::sighs:: men

Well he got me a swordtail pair, a corry pair and a female betta for the community and a male betta for my panted bowl. I kno his intentions were good tho...
