right now i have

1 ryukin
1 comet
4 common guppies
1 beta
and
1 african butterfly fish

Would any of these eat a snail ? :-)

Ermm... not to sound like a broken record or anything, but are these fish all together? If so, you are mixing tropical fish with cool water fish. They eat different foods, and require different water temps. Not to mention goldfish produce tons of waste, and grow to a foot long.

I dont see how plants can give off oils, and cause foam on the surface of your aquarium, but ok....

Whats a 'big tank'? How large is the aquarium? How do you know they are happy, because they are alive?

Please understand I am not bashing you or your methods, but some of us have been keeping fish for a long time and this falls into the "been there, done that" sort of deal. Facts back up the reality that goldfish and tropical fish do not do well together. 1 year isn't long enough to judge either, as Goldfish can live 15-20+ years if cared for properly.

As for the foam it may be that if you use soap to clean out the tank the filter may be mixing it up with the water. Also I had 3 snails (2 died of lack of food or other) and I have pretty big goldfish a least 5 inches and they don't touch the snail.
