View Full Version : Junk Products
Let's all make a list..of Junk. :D This would be good for any newbies to the hobby, and veterans who might attempt to use these products.
The product I choose to add to the list:
1.Marineland's Bio-Spira Freshwater "Bacteria"

1979 Ford Pinto :D
Oh, fish products? My last plastic canopy was a real POS, I'll nominate plastic canopies. Glass is soooo much better.
What kind of canopy was your plastic one? Oceanic? Perfecto? I do agree though, the glass Versa-Tops (I just cut glass and make a hinge it's cheaper) and striplights are better in some ways
More Products that are Garbage:
2. pH Up
3. pH Down
3. PH 7.0
4. Had-A-Snail

1) Unnecessary chemicals. Why turn your tank into a science experiment when a simple partial water change will suffice? (I know, I know adding 3 drops from the skull and crossbones bottle is easier than replacing 20 odd gallons).
2) Most inexpensive heaters. (Why is it so hard to make a decent heater that doesn't go ape? Even in the short term).
3) Most suction cups (and usually the plastic junk of dubious validity attached to them). This one's so true - they often fail in a few months but the plastic in the dump lasts 200 years! I want some of that!

O snap, what brand of de-chlorinator so you use?

Missing parts for new mini bio wheel
uneven airflow from double outlet hagen air pump
coralife e-z ballast that was nearly a disaster
Whisper in tank filters--loud as hell and can't fill tank to tip top with one of these
gravel vaccuum(marine land): Never buy one of these
GOOD PRODUCTS:
maybe zoo med--small product line though, want to try one of their
flouro bulbs in the future. I have a water pump by them and is very
dependable and well made-with suction cups I could use to climb a
skyscraper.

Pretty much any topfin product, but as mentioned in another thread, their heaters are especially bad.

5 things I already don't like about this thread.
1. Bio-spira is the first on the list, and is by no means junk.
2. I have had a topfin 10 gal filter work for over 5 years with no problems at all (though the heater did crap out after a few months)
3. someone said it's ok to not use dechlorinator.
4. UGF's are not junk either
5. the thread is almost 4 years old.

WOW! I am at a loss! Bio-Spira is one of the BEST aquarium products on the market.he said biospira?! WTH? I thought he meant AP stress-zyme stuff..... wow, that is odd. how could someone hate biospira? to each one his own opinion, I guess.

wow, i didn't notice this thread was 4 years old!
anyways, i don't agree with some of the stuff in here either (Bio-Spira being one of them, its great!) but these are some of the stuff i consider "junk":
in no particular order....
1. Hagen air pumps, they are loud as heck!
2. Cycle, stress zyme, etc, they don't work!
3. Vacation feeding pyramid blocks....
4. Aquatic garden's heaters... they aren't temp stable

those aquarium plant bulbs that they sell at walmart and petco. They are annuals so they come up all nice and quick and big then a few months later completely die off.
Hydor Filters- One of the presurised filter cartridges blew up and not being a sealed unit like a canister filter emtied half of my old 55 gallon on the floor.
Hyundia's-of wait I forgot this isnt for cars

Pitpatif - welcome to the fourms... but I may suggest not to revive a thread after being dead nearly 4 years. A lot of people tend to respond to other things that have been said along time ago not even realizing that those folks are no longer wathing the thread or perhaps havent even been around for years lol. I bet you may not have even realized, but do check the dates especially when you finding info using the search feature :)
Threads like this are sure to start some heated arguments though
