I have a 20gal tank, moderately planted with fake plants (with plans to add more) currently housing 13 neon tetras. Filtration is a Regent (wal-mart special?) power filter with AquaClear sponges added inside. I'm not sure about test readings, I have no tests atm :( but last time I had the water tested at LFS it was fine.

My question is, how many neons do you think I can safely keep in this setup? I plan to add 3 albino corys soon and was also thinking about otos (how many?) With all that in mind, how many more neons do you think I can add?

Thanks for your help :)

Well neons are th eonly fish that seems to follow that 1 inch per gallon rule. So if you did follwo it then 20 max per a 20 gallon tank. But that would mean no more fish at all. I would stick to what you have and maybe add the 3 cories. But I wouldn't add the ottos as well. They tend to be fish that need perfect quality water and you will have a heavy load in there. You will need to get some test kits if you are going to max out like that.

20neons and 3 cories in a 20g sounds about right. I would say to have to get something for the bottom as it adds a level of interest to the tank and the cories will clean up after the neons for you :)

Nice tank aswell :)

Nice tank! I second the motion of having 20 neons and 3 or 4 cories on the bottom... see if you can find 'dwarf' cories, as they tend to stay a lot smaller than the regular sized ones, and if you can find the dwarfs, I'd say you could get 5 of them, as long as you keep up w/ water changes!

Good luck!

Thanks

Thanks for your comments. :D

I have another question regarding this tank. The Regent HOB filter doesnt disturb the water surface all that much, just a little ripple from the water falling back in. Is this sufficient air exchange?

I think in the pic you can see up at the top the water falling into the tank... just a little to the left of the intake tube. In the meantime, I've put in an air stone and run it for a couple hours every other day or so, just to be safe. Obviously I'd rather not run this at all ;).
