Is it possible to use a Nitrate test kit that was made for sw in a fw setup, and if so is there any conversion involved in the reading? I got this kit with my used 55. Thanks.

unless it came with a FW color chart, i wouldn't. Plus, they're dirt cheap. you can get a FW/SW aquarium pharmaceuticals nitrate test kit for about $3 at big al's that will last you the rest of your life, with some left over for your kids.

The NO3 test that I'm familiar with is identical for fresh or salt water. There's not much in the way of salt effects, but if memory serves, the reaction in freshwater produces a slightly lighter colour. But otherwise, yes, you can make the crossover, but as Chico mentioned, unless you've got the FW colour chart, take your measures as more of a ballpark figure.
