My opinion is not to use an under gravel filter and get a HOB (HangOnBack) or a quality canister like Rena's Filstar. I don't like the way an under gravel filter works. I believe filters should remove waste from an aquarium, and not hold it down in, and under the gravel.

Filters trap waste, whether HOB, Canister, whatever. Fish keepers remove that waste by cleaning the filter. Debris trapped in a filter is still in the water.

UG/RFUG is not for everyone or every situation. If you have sand, they don't do much as the sand will sift through the slots of the plate. UGs are designed for gravel.
