Hello,

I'm looking to move my figure 8 into a larger tank, and have been thinking about what kind of aquascape design to do...

My puff is in light brackish 1.005, housed alone, in a 10 gallon tank. I have an empty 30 gallon long style that I was thinking of moving him into (do you think that would be sufficient?).

I kind of want to do a specimen/biotype tank with just the puff -- and maybe some salt tolerant plants. I know fig 8s are considered brackish, but what would their natural habitat specifically look like? Estuary? Mangrove? Marsh?

Any ideas?

:)

Mangrove is certainly visually more appealing than an estuary mouth, although with artificial plants you could do some marsh edge/channel look.

Any of your ecotypes would do, but low density live plants are not easy. Some few FW plants are adaptable, but most folks lose them at that level (including me).

The tank would be generous for a single figure-8. You could add a pair or a couple of pairs of bumblebee gobies for scavenger duties and some interest of their own. Ghost shrimp are also worth a try, but may well be eaten.

Thanks for the tips RTR.

Right now I have a java fern plant and a ball of java moss in his tank. So far the plants are still alive, but there hasn't been any growth at all -- plus some of the java fern has puffer sized bite holes all over it. I don't know how much longer it will last.

Once you get past 1.004 sg the plants will start to die off pretty quick. Java fern might hold on for a bit but in the end won't be able to take it.
