View Full Version : Guilty, guilty, guilty!

As some of you may recall, last October I had my windshield broken by some kids who were throwing rocks at passing vehicles on the highway and an interstate. Ended up as a juvenile jury trial (first in Wyoming in 18 years) that concluded yesterday. Witnesses (those in the damaged vehicles) came from 6 different states--3 were flown in!

All three were found guilty of all charges, ranging from felony assault, felony destruction of property, and drinking underage.

Sentencing has yet to occur--but I'm hoping for the best (for me, of course--worst for them).

Awesome, OG! (the guilty verdicts, not the rocks!)

I hope they get a fitting punishment, unlike the girl in Wisconsin (i think that's where it was) who claimed she was kidnapped, and had the police and people searching for her for 4 days, only for her to come out and say she was lying.... she got 3 years probation and has to pay $250 per month to reimburse the state for the money they spent on the search...

Good for you, and good that there are consequences to stupid and dangerous behavior. I hope there's some publicity about this.

Your lucky, a few years ago some kids threw a rock off a over pass and it hit a school bus and went through the window and killed the driver. But unlike your case the kids were never found

I hope they get punished and not jsut fined

That’s ridiculous... that people actually do stuff like this. Ugh... I hope they get the max, and LOTS of community service. Picking up trash on the highways sounds good!

i dont like the idea of community service...picking up trash might be ok but a lot of times they get to choose where they want to do the service.
i volunteer at the humane society and one day some 13 year old kid came in there because he was being forced to do community service and he kept dropping puppies and doing all sorts of bad things. i had to ask for him to be removed.

It doesn't work that way in Michigan. The people doing community service are more often than not assigned to work in the targeted area... and I still think trash pick-up would be cool. :D

There were some kids here a couple of weeks ago that tossed some rocks off of the over pass on to the interstate. They are being brought up on murder charges but, I'm not sure if they are being tried as adults or not. I hope they do that is one of the most asinine things I've ever heard of. I've always wondered why some people get so much enjoyment out of causing other people misery? :sad

Well.... they are KIDS doing the STUPID stuff kids do.... I never threw rocks at cars, but I did some pretty stupid things growing up. Some kids just don't have enough "logical thought processes" yet to understand the full consequences of their actions (some, sadly, really DO intend to hurt someone). THAT IS WHY GOD MADE PARENTS!!! Where were these kids' parents? Are they being held accountable as well? Yes the kids DO need to be punished, and community service and fines might be enough depending on their previous behavior, but the parents also need to be held accountable for their children being unsupervised. I'm glad you weren't hurt OG. That could have been much worse than it was.

jacblades - Sounds like your juvi needs to be reminded that animal cruelty is ALSO a crime.

well adblair, while I agree the parents should be accountable at some point..... if these juvies were young teens, I hardly think their parents are able to supervise their every step....

The oldest as 17, youngest 13. Sorry, but by that age, they should know right from wrong, IMO--I know I did!

Yes, the parents will be punished as well--they'll be the ones to pay the fines, and pay for the cost of keeping the kids in detention.

Doesn't that also mean that you get to pay as well, through your taxes?

Kids do some incredibly stupid things, sometimes, the parents are equally appalling. A couple years ago 2 boys here derailed a train by messing with the switching mechanism. I don't think that anyone was killed, but it was a while ago. They got off scot free by blaming it on their younger, and metally challenged, brother. A claim the parents substantiated. So was it really a surprise when earlier this year they were brought up on animal cruelty charges for hanging a cat? (which survived because the neighbour's kid rescued it) Not really.

Sorry about the off topic rant. OG, I'm really glad that the troublemakers were found guilty and that you weren't hurt. Do they have to pay for your windshield as well? I hope so.

IMO the 17 year old is old enough that his parents shouldn't necessarily be held fully responsible. But the 13 year old's folks should get the book thrown at them. Man, when I was 17, I wasn't hanging out with 13 year olds?! As a parent, I'd be suspicious.

I remember about 8 years ago some kids threw a bowling ball off an overpass, went through the windshield and right into the back seat of a car, killing a baby that was strapped to the baby seat right in the center

Holy Cow OG!! I am glad the found the little !@#$s that did it. That is horrible! I hope you were able get your car fixed OK. I am so glad they caught them too. Let us know the sentencing. I hope they get the book thrown at them hard! I did stupid stuff as a kid but I knew better than that kind of stuff.

Jacblades - that is so bad about the community service! hurting animals is REALLY bad and it really freaks me out when I hear about anything like that or the kitty in the other post.

Any kid hurting animals does not want me to catch him doing it.....

Dangerdoll

yeah..... I must admit, I did some crazy stuff too but nothing to damage property or with the intent on causing some kind of damage...... geez, and I thought I was a bad kid ;) anywho.... I agree, anyone who intentionally hurts animals as you have mentioned here jac is in need for something deeper than community service and should seriously be reconsidered for some kind of therapy..... if they're that young and have no regard on another life..... I don't even want to think what'll happen down the road.... the possibilities for it getting worse are just too possible.

Some deeper therapy indeed! How about some societal reintegration, Clockwork Orange style!
