What would be an ideal tankmate of angelfish... ideally a small schooling fish. I wanted neons, but according to some, they will be eaten.

Cory catfish make good tankmates, but aren't small schooling fish... for that, maybe black neons would be good. I think they get too big to be eaten by an angelfish.
correction Chico Corys are a schooling fish! Also I might try Ram cichlids they are good little fish and will beable to put up a fight against a angel if challenged. Also try larger tetras such as bleeding hearts. A balck neon might be a little small seeing as they only get to about an inch and a half.

vato: corydoras do like to be in groups, but they don't usually school. The black neons get fatter than neons, and a 1.5 inch fish is a lot of fish for an angel... just a thought. Rams, thought not schoolers, would definitely be an interesitng addition. I also like black phantom tetras.

According to my sources, all of the neons get 1.5-2". I originally wanted gold neons.... are these larger than regular neons?
They may not technically considered a schooling fish, but a shoaling fish. For all intended purposes it is basically the same thing. In the wild they travel around in groups of a dozen+. gold neons are a different veriety of the neon tetra so are the same size. A 1.5 inch fish may not be too much work for a full grown (7") angel, being a carnivorus fish. I really don't mean to purposfully contradict you Chico:(, I'm just trying to get the proper information across.

If you raise the Angels and Cardinals from when they're fry, there's a chance they'll get used to eachother by the time the Angel becomes full-grown and won't snack on the Cardinals.
You can also try Serpae Tetras, which grow bigger but they could be nasty nippers.

Given sufficent room and numbers corys will school, I believe. I've seen some great pictures of dozens of them together in big aquariums doing so.
I have heard what m3th0d mentioned. But I have never tried it myself, if you are really set on having both, give that a try.
