How would one attempt to find this species in the wild. I have been surfing the net for good retailers, but in my opinion, 8 dollars for a 2inch by 2inch square of "water weed" is a bit expensive (I also have to pay for the shipping and handling). I did some research and found out that this specific species actually prospers in the waters of the Pacific North West!!!! Would any one know good spots where i could find this plant? I live around the portland area

I'm not sure, but I do remember seeing something I am just about positive was java moss growing on a dock piling in the colubmia river near tacoma.
(edit) and if you do find any, collect every bit you can and sell it on the internet for $4 for a 2x2 square! drive the other beesterds out of business!

Heh, if i found a good spot. I would sell it on the net for 2.00 per 3by3 square inch sections. No cost to me. Ill let nature provide all the essentials.
BTW, does anyone know if this plant can survive a 10 sec bleach bath?
I was thinking the same since I've getting some Riccia in the mail and after doing some research online, it appears that no one reccomends bleaching riccia...they will not survive apparently.
So, to err on the cautious side, I'd not bleach.

I would check with your local Fish and Game Agency or your local Department of Natural Resources office to go over collection guidelines. Field agents from either department should be able to tell you where to look. If they don't know where to start, check with your local Extension Service. If the Riccia is growing rapidly, you may find that they spray it with herbicide to keep it in check in busy waterways as it is a surface growing plant. Past that, I would imagine you'll need a small boat or canoe to find what you're looking for.
I have a boat that will float and run under power in about 3" of water. A dollar bill is a little over 6" to give you some basis of comparison. At any rate, I've found some great local, native plants for my aquarium and my pond.
Good luck!
