Hello everyone!
We're moving this weekend, and I thought I'd post for some advice/thoughts.
First thing though, I want to use sand in the new house instead of rocks.
I've read you can just use regular play sand from the hardware store, so long as its clean and all. What do you guys think?
Here's whats in the tanks:
55g:
2 angels
2 clown loaches
2 red barbs
4 tiger barbs
4 cory
4 ottos
This one is way under its population limit, we decided not to up it till we move.
55g:
4 angels
3 mollies
5 cory
lots of plants
again, its under its limit, and again, we'll add more after we move and get the fish settled.
70g:
1 oscar
1 large pleco
1 tiger striped fish thats about 6 inches long, i forgot what he's called.
Anywho, would any of these fish not work with the sand substrate? Is there anything else I should know about sand before I use it? Should you rinse it the way you do rocks?
----------------------------------
And now about the moving. Since we're doing the sand transition on the day we move the tanks, heres what i'm thinking would be the best way. Also: we're only moving about 5 miles.
I've already put an extra (hob) filter on one of the 55g tanks to prep it for the move (this is in addition to our canister filter). We have an extra 30g tank thats not in use now.
I plan on taking the 30g to the new house and setting it up with that hob filter, that will have about 10 days worth of time in the 55g.
take our community tank and drain about 20g of water from it, take that water to the new house and put it in that 30g tank with about 10g of new water. (bare tank here) and move the fish over into that tank.
(so they get what is effectively a 30 percent water change in that trip.)
then come back to the house and drain the remaining water into buckets. clean out the tank and move it to the new house. never draining our canister filter and eventually putting the water thats in the 30g into the 55 with the fish.
so they'd get about a 20% water change, have the same filter and new sand substrate. This is about the least stressfull way to move the fishes i could figure. They get netted twice, but at least they'll only be in an unfiltered bucket for max, 20 mins.
What do you guys think? any suggestions?
