We are looking for a new place and my wife made the comment that I could be getting the dreamed about 75 gallon tank.

I already know I want to have it planted so no rough houseing digging fish.

I would like to have to have a cichlid that could show off the parenting skills they are known for. So that limits the selection somewhat to fish that are not to big to grow out the young for a while.

One idea is to get a group of juvie angelfish and grow them out till I get a pair, and sell off the rest.

for a separate idea, is there another cichlid that I could consider instead of angels to breed in there?

I guess I am sure there are other fish out there besides the angels rams and kribs that I am so familiar with and want you to give species of fish that might not be as common but still quite desireable/pretty.

Seriously they seem to answer most of your criteria. Maybe have a think about them? They are not a complicated as people would have believe. 125gJoe has some great pics of the planted 80g tank he orginally had for his Discus. Not much size difference but if he could post a pic it may give you some idea of what I am rambling on about......

I would try the Angel pair for the top and mid level of the tank and for the bottom a dwarf species. Here are a few otions for you to research.

Any Apistogramma

Nannacara anomala
Nannacara aureocephalus
Nannacara taenia

Laetacara curviceps
Laetatcara dorsigera

Cleithracara maronii (keyhole cichlid)

I say discus as well, maybe angels if you like them. I'd love to try discus but i don't have the money for an RO unit, not to mention the fish! But they are really beautiful and have awesome parenting skills

whether I would consider discus depends on where we move. if we move into Walla Walla city proper it would be an option, but if we don't I don't think I would want to try to haul enough water for the extra water changes I would want to give the discus.

thank you Reiner for the list, that is right on what I wanted to be able to consider one stocking option.

Are there any other non dwarf cichlids besides angelfish and discus that don't dig/tear plants up that would not be cruel to put in a 75.

I would like names of any cichlid that is plant friendly and would go in the 75....

for that matter any 'smart' fish with the above requirements that I might have the chance of breeding if I worked at it

hehe planning is almost as fun as the tanks themselves

correct me if i'm wrong but aren't convicts good parents. And JD's are good parents to right

just about all the cichlids are exelent parents, the reason I am asking here about them. my primary interest you might say is the plants... and I am just asking what fish I might have with them that have the chance of distracting me from those plants:p ;)

no arguements about the convicts being good parents but I was wanting something abit less common. Something that if I do have success with raiseing young they would be of interest to other aquarists.
