Im just wondering how big a filter i should have on my 29gal. tank.It came with a Regent 20-40 HOB filter. It says its good for up to 40 gallon. I question this.

Last time I had my 29 set up I used a Wisper Power Filter 30-60. When I set it back up I am going to use a Fulval Canister Filter cause I am gonna put a couple of Goldfish in it and I need the extra filtration. I really like Wisper for filters, I have yet to have any problems with the brand, but I do also use Penguin on my 72 gallon... also a really nice filter. I think that your Regent should be ok for your tank though, I have used those a couple of times but always went back to Wisper (easier to find the cartrages for that in my area)

find the rated watefflow of the HOB, you want 7+ times your tank volume per hour. I personally like it above 10 x. In other words, if you have a 30g, look for a filter, or better yet two filters that total 300 GPh or more.

I also like using 2 filters, for the 29 I use a penguin 170, and a whisper c. I really like the idea of the biowheel, but they don't seem to push the water through like a whisper or aquaclear. I never clean both filters at the same time. I also use a powerhead with a sponge prefilter, but that's because I have loaches that like the bubbles.

its the one with the intake tube in the middle and 2 cartridges on the side right? if its the smaller one with just one filter cartridge it might be too small

the one i have has only 1 cartridge. Its the premade ones with blue filter media attached to a plastic frame. There is a compartment in the frame that holds the carbon.I added polywool to the filter compartment just in front of cartridge media. It did help make the water clearer but reduced water flow. I wish the kit i bought had come with an Aquaclear filter instead.

you've got a filter so now if you want you can watch bigalsonline.com and dr.fosters.com (they're the 2 cheapest that i know of) and get an aquaclear when they go on sale. Just add it to your existing. The best filter I have for flow is a little black one that I've had so long I don't remember what kind it is. Its too small to hold enough media for most tanks, but it REALLY pushes the water through. If your regent turns out like that, you'll just need a second for safety.
I agree that the filter you have will do for now. Just wait until you see something else on sale, stock lightly and do decent 30% plus water changes each week.
