Geez, not ANOTHER newbie question?

Water.

It's the main source in your tank. Tap water has chlorine and such in it, so....

What about purified water? The water that one can buy in gallon jugs? Good? Bad?

I believe it's been said that the stuff you buy in stores like that doesn't have the required buffering capacity and can thus cause problems.

Just move away from the cities so you're on well water.... no more chlorine!! ;)

I wish.

Other than chlorine (which is easily treated) what's wrong with your tap water? If it's safe to drink, it's probably OK for your fish.

There are a number of waters you can purchase. Some may be reverse osmosis water which, as has been stated, isn't good for fish unless you put in some additives. Some store-water is just spring water that may or may not contain chlorine.

The easiest place to start: what fish do you keep (or want to keep) and what makes you concerned your tap water isn't good for them?

I have used city tap water for years now with no problems. Sicne mine only contains chlorine and not chloramine I actually let it sit out for at least 24 hours and use a half dose of dechlorinator and have no trouble, plus get to use less chemicals.

Not really concerned.

I am just looking for short cuts. I dont really like chemical additives. I am a little weird I guess. I figure the less I add to the water, the more "pure" it will be for my fish.

Thats the route I have been taking minus the HALF DOSE.

Well my dechlorinator says it gets rid of heavy metals as well. While I assume the chlorine is gone 1 or 2 drop of Wardely's Dechlorinator per gallon is just a little added security for me. I don't use any dechlorinators that add slime coat or detoxify ammonia and what not as those are situations I don't face.

That should be fine, if you only have chlorine in your water (not chloramine), letting your water sit out should be fine to allow the chlorine to offgas.

You mention that you're looking for short cuts... purchasing jugs of water certainly isn't a short cut. Lugging home water at 8 pounds a gallon gets old fast! Allowing the water to sit out seems like a much more energy-efficient way to get water for your fish...
