I have a 55 that was given to me with one big african cichlid in it. As the fish is pushing 8 inches I'm moving him to a 48 x 18 x 17 tank all his own and getting his pH back to where it should be from the nice acid water he was given to me in.
Since I got the cichlid I've added a Polypterus Senegalus to his tank because someone dumped it where I work. He's approaching 8 inches as well, but is much less mobile than the cichlid, so he's staying in here for a while.
I'm looking for suggestions of who can live in a slightly acidic tank with the bichir, and one unidentified synodontis cat (around 6 inches). Needs to be over 3 inches to avoid getting eaten on introduction.
I was thinking of a firemouth, or a jewel, but I haven't really kept the more aggressive american or rivertine african cichlids. I don't want it to be so aggressive it starts beating my polypterus, but it can't be a pushover either. I'd prefer an african rivertine, but I'm not exactly sure what to start researching with. I'd prefer that it can live in the 55 it's whole life, with no trade ups. So looking for something that stays under 7 inches or so.
Any help is appreciated
