I'm planning to buy a new tank and make one of my old 5 gal. a home for the fry to live in...that out of the way..I was wondering what types of plants would be best for growing fry..mainly livebearer fry.

IMO ( I raise feeder guppies) Java moss is the way to go. it spreads quickly, grows in almost any condition, and houses huge levels of infusoria which the fry can and will eat. In my Guppy tank, the fry pick at all of the plants and graze the sponges, but they really hammer the java moss constantly. They seem to like the crypt jungle for hiding in, but don't actively feed in the crypts as much. someone may argue this point, but all of my guppies seem to graze algea as well.

I agree you rock dave!..I have yet another question..Is java moss like java fern where it can stick to anything and if so what are some techniques on how to help it grow on rocks, wood, etc...?

Just take the java moss and make sure it is in steady contact with a rough surface. Soon it will attach on it's own. Some folks use staples to attach it to driftwood, others use rubberbands or fishing line or just wedge it in place. If I want to just grow a clump on the gravel itself, I just drop a small stone onto the patch right where I want it. The stone will keep the moss from floating, and sooner rather than later, it will become attached to the moss and serve as an anchor if you decide to move the clump later.

Hmm..for some reason most stores where I live don't carry Java Moss..but they do have Java Fern. Why do they share the java name??? Are they related? Anyway, I got one small Java Fern plant added..the platys seem to like it especially the 1.5 month old platys..the biggest hides in it. My search continues as I'm thumbing the Yellow Pages...I need Java Moss!
