ok, so ive been looking at getting about 50 more pounds of live rock and decided i would check out TBS. i dont understnd why everyone buys from there. im by no means bashing TBS or saying that its not worth it. but around here i can buy live rock cheaper at most of the LFS (with the exception of inland aquatics). my question is how much is live rock where you guys live, and where is it that you live. i have gotten star polyps, mushrooms and things like that on mine. is there something special that im missing? and once again i am by no means bashing TBS or saying not to get it there, i am just trying to be a little more informed.

I have never ordered for TBS, but Ive only heard good comments. The LR around here can be anywhere from $11 a lb. to $5 a lb. Most of the stuff here looks like they just put "dead" rock in a tank and put a bunch of lights over it to grow algae and stuf on it to make it look live. Just about everything looks like crap. There is NO coralline algae growth at all. I think they attach little peices of macro algae to make it look better. If the stuff by you looks good, and is cheap, I would go for it.

the stuff i get seems to be good rock, covered with corraline algae and usually has some type of coral on it. ive had star polyps and brararium(i think thats how you spell it) encrusting coral on the last couple rocks i have bought. i dont think that i have ever heard a bad comment about TBS either. i usually get my rock for $6 a pound. can someone give some exmples of some coral or other hitchhikers they have received. i mean if its worth it for that kind of stuff, maybe ill buy some of it. thanks for any help.

Here in Chicago, pretty much anywhere you go, live rock is gonna run you around $7 a pound. Other than 1 or 2 stores (and I've visited pretty much every single fish store in the surrounding area), you get some polyps, mushrooms, ALOT of corraline algea, etc. on the rock. It's just still hard to believe that this stuff is so expensive...it's rock, people...come on. lol I cant afford to put anymore live rock in my 200gal. tank, so I think I'm gonna buy 50lbs. or so of lace rock and mix it together. Hopefully the lace rock will be start turning "live" after a while.

Ours is about 7 or 8 dollars a pound, and there's really only one place in town that sells it. Sometimes Petco has a piece or 2, but I'd never even consider buying it. Our LFS with the LR does not keep their LR under lights, so all the algae dies! It really pays for me to order on-line. I got mine from premiumaquatics.com and I was very happy with it (especially after seeing my LFS's rock.)
