i think it's finally for real. i'm setting up a saltwater tank.

i received a 29 gallon all-glass from a couple of my friends for christmas. i was always talking about setting up a heavily planted tank, and i think they just wanted to make sure i got started. i had it all planned out, every little bit: fish stock, aquascape, filtration, lighting, etc.

and then i have a completely random thought: fuzzy dwarf lion. and at first i tried to blow it off, but it persisted. then i started doing some reading and find out that people actually keep dwarf fuzzies in 29 gallon fowlr setups.

good bye dreams of a mid -sized, lush underwater garden.

hello saltwater.

now this is the part where i need help.

the only thing i have right now is the tank. the thing that would be most helpful would be a checklist of what i need.

powerheads (brand?/flow rate?/etc?)
liverock(how many #'s?/recommended online dealers/...)
sand/livesand(dsb?/anything else?)
heater (brand?/wattage?/whatnot?)
words of encouragement(hey tyler! welcome aboard! hope you brought your wallet, cause it's a long ride!/anything else you can think of... )

thank you, everybody.

Hey Tyler! Welcome aboard! No need to empty the wallet, your tank won't cost that much!

Here's all ya need:
Tank (Merry Christmas!)
NO Lighting (assuming you have a hood with the tank, you have this... I'd use a Power-Glo bulb, $10)
10-15lbs of liverock (your only real expense, can get 30lbs of Gulf View for like $130 delivered...)
reliable 100w heater (I own nothing but Ebo Jagers for a reason)
1 - 50lb bag of sand from Home Depot (Southdown if you can, otherwise anything will do... $3)
5-10lbs of livesand (to seed your "dead" sand, $1-2/lb)
2 - Hagen 301 powerheads (one at each end of the tank aimed at each other for nice chaotic flow $14 each at Big Als)

Test kits, thermometer, the usual junk like that... That's about it =) Enjoy the ride, you'll never go back ;)

I cna put project nano on hold a few weeks until you're ready adn we can order LR in bulk

It depends on your bioload... Typically for a single specimen tank 1lb/gallon will suffice unless its a really big predator, like a Volitan Lion or sumthin... Fuzzies are predators, but no where near the scale of a Volitan... My rule of thumb is that by the time you have enough LR to make the tank look good, you have enough to make it function too =)

Only thing I'd add to your shopping list is a skimmer. You don't need one, but lions are akin to goldfish in the amount of waste they can produce, and a skimmer will definitely help. Have fun!
