I am setting up a 10G feeder tank for my Cichlids. What are the best fish to use? guppies, convicts... What will give me the most offspring?

Also, do I need to put any substrate in the tank?

How big are your fish going to get? That may depend on what kind of feeders you'd like to give them.

I breed guppies for that purpose and I rather enjoy it also. The tanks I breed them in are completely bare. Just water, heater, filter, and lighting. Convicts are easy to breed, and usually have more fry than most guppies but in my honest opinion the fry are more difficult to care for. Also as they get bigger thier body shape is different from that of a guppy or minnow of some kind.

I figure whenever they had more offspring I would take out the previous batch and feed them to my larger fish, or if they were producing alot I would feed them gradually, or put a divider in the tank. It's not for looks, it will be in my storage room with my other fish supplies. I was thinking 1 or 2? males and about 4? female guppies??. Check out my tank specs to see the recipents.

I also breed guppies for my fish. I bought them as feeders because im so lazy. Anyway, it took them a good 2 months at least to reprouduce, I had 20 of them in a 15 gallon. in the last 3 weeks they may have produced about 10-15 fry. I just pick out an unpregnat looking fish, male or female dont care, and shove it in the tank - its all over in about 2 seconds. The hard part is catching them.

Do I need to cycle this tank if I take a filter from my 30g tank that has been there about a month and enough water from it to fill the new tank???
