Well, since Frances blew through my entire saltwater reef crashed. I was without power for over 28 hours, and nothing made it. In attempts to completely restart my tank this afternoon (lots of work, let me tell you!) I made plenty of trips to the LFS. While there, my attention dirfted from the reefing side to the freshwater side, one I hadn't visited in a long time. I have 3 tanks set up, and 2 of them are fresh (10, 29, both were previously planted, but are now beautifully decorated with plastic) and I had been needing to pick up some stuff for those tanks for a while, but I was always preoccupied with my marine tank! Since I knew buying any livestock for the saltwater aquarium was out of the picture (even though they had a beautiful Potter's Angel for sale....OMG! :sad) I figured I could splurge for a much needed algea eater for the 29.

I knew I wanted a Bristlenose Pleco, so walking through the isles looking for one, I accidentally stumbled across the absolute coolest fish, and I new right there I had to have some.

They are so tiny, yet bursting with striking colors. They flitter and flutter out and about the water in loose schools, and captured my heart in an instant. They are: Endler's Livebearers!

MUCH more charming than Guppies and even considered rare, these fish are (IMO) the epitome of the Freshwater Hobby. I couldn't believe how cool these little fish are, and now I can't stop watching them in the 10 Gallon in my room. They are in the tank with 4 other Neon tetras, and everyone is getting along great.

I think it's so odd how I've been a part of the freshwater hobby for over 3 years now, and have never ever heard of these fish until now! All I'm thinking is how lucky I am to stumble upon 7 of these cool little fish! How many of you have these awesome little fish? Dunno about you, but I already want to set up a species tank limited to only these guys- they are so awesome!

:: Wow- I can't believe I just typed that much about these little fish, I'm one of those people that says in 5 sentences what could have been said in 1, so basically, uh, yea, Endler's Livebearers....cool, real cool...::

I saw what I'm pretty sure was one in a plant display tank, I thought it was really cool. I agree, they're really neat.

I've never had one but I hear they're neat. I plan to set up my 10g as a mini-planted tank with cuttings from my 55 whenever my plants grow in, and breed some endlers in it since they seem to be hard to find...odd considering they're livebearers but... anywho. congrats on finding those cool little fish :)

LOTR=Awesome!!!

Hey sry about ur marine tank :sad and i hope ur spared when ivan comes around! u poor ppl are just being hit one right after another!!!My family and I (from Canada,eh?) were vaccationing down in florida when charley hit-and spoiled the trip lol oh well i think there was a post a while back in this strand or the newbie one about a girl trying to find "pure endlers", and som eppl reccomended some websites u mite want to check out-im also a livebearers fan and :OT: MAJOR LOTR fan!!!!! BORDERLINE OBSESSIVE!!! haha i think i have an obsessive nature...dogs,fish,movies,books lol!

I've got a "few", somewhere in the neighborhood of 125-150 of them. lol
I began with a group from numerous "pure" sources a few months ago. Original purchases were a total of 22 adults. Well, by the time they arrived through shipping their numbers had almost doubled. In fact in two of the shipments there were fry that were less than 72 hours old.
For those who have no clue about the fish, they are an "art deco" type fish, splashes of orange, black, green, etc. Beautiful.

These pictures are from another website *giving proper credit* and are all of males. The females look almost exactly like common female guppies. http://www.endlerslivebearer.net

A word of warning, do NOT keep Endler's with guppy of any kind/type. They will cross breed.

That is a total heartbreak on your reef tank, you have my condolences. :(

On a more positive note, I recently went thu the exact same realization of Endlers. While they may be basically identical to guppies on skill to keep and breed, they are amazing! These fish are wonderful to watch, and are strikingly beautiful - especially in a planted tank.

The controversy of their status in the natural world also makes them particularly interesting. As heat said, most consider it a major party foul to keep Endlers with guppies. Not simply because hybrids are produced, but because if stocked/moved irresponsibly they can RAPIDLY affect existing amount of "Pure" Endlers out there. (Which is not many)

same here, only I don't have any money right now... after I get paid though, I'd buy some if you wanna send them my way :D

[edit]

That's a huge bummer about your reef. maybe look in to a UPS or a generator?
Best of luck with getting it up and running again!

I love my Endler's. Hardy, quick breeding, beautiful, don't bother other fish, fearless, what more could one ask for? :D
