Just wanna say sorry about the comment about the young kid at Petland. I'm sure you'll be much better. Anyways, I was going to put my neon tetras in with the barbs. I thought that might be ok but I haven't done it yet. Just last night I went to bed and had 10 tiger barbs and when I got up this morning one was nowhere to be found. I was wondering if maybe the others ate it? Is it true that the male tb's have darker colors? Out of the 9 that I have left there are 2 with dark stripes and the lighter colored ones seem to follow the two dark ones around the tank. I have one more question to add to this book I seem to be writing. Are black phantom tetras the same as just black tetras? I seen some at the store called black tetras and they had black stripes on them. Just wondering if they're the same?

Thanks to everyone's responses to my tiger barb/angelfish questions

haha, no worries. I have to agree, most young kids working at pet stores have no idea what they're talking about ;)

The TB's and the neons should be ok together. I'm not sure about how to determine the gender of the TB's though.

You might try looking around the tank on the floor for the missing tiger barb. They have been known to jump form time to time.

Common names make it difficult to tell what species is being referrred to, unfortunately. black phantom tetras have a spot on their side, with a silvery border around it sort of. Sounds like what you were looking at might be a black phantom tetra. Did it look like this?:

Black skirts, I might warn you, are a little bit nippy, similar to tiger barbs.

hope that helps, and again, don't worry, I wasn't offended :)

black phantom tetras

Yeah, that's the fish I was talking about. At the pet store all it said was black tetras. I looked them up and decided not to get them, I don't need any more nippers! I went with the pink kissing gouramis instead. Iread the're compatible with the tb's. So far so good. My hubby doesn't like them but I thonk they're interesting to watch. I also got a rainbow shark. It's a cool little fish. Fast as hell though! I thought at first the tb's were gonna mess with it but it chases them off if they get too close. Glad to hear you weren't offended by my comment about young kids at pet stores!
