I have a 10 gallon that has been cyclying for about 5 weeks. It has one Platy in it. The ammonia is 0. Nitrates are at 20 and have been there for one week. The Nitrites are deep purple, purple is 5.0 on my test strip, so this color is alot higher than the test strip. The Nitrites and Nitrates have been reading the same for over a week with no change. Is it stuck, and what should I do. PH is fine.

It's possible that nitrite-metabolizing bacteria are sensitive to the ammonia that was in the water in earlier stages of the cycle.

Now that NH3 is undetectable, try re-seeding. Take a surface scraping of gravel from a well-matured aquarium, or a filter insert, and seed your new system with it, once again. The nitrites should now fall rapidly.

HTH!

I'm no psychic, so, I'd suggest asking your question or sharing your concern once again...

Perhaps I overlooked something.. :D

I think TRJAM was trying to bump this thread (http://64.191.28.50/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3426), about being stuck in a nitrite spike. After being advised they could reseed from filter media or substrate they replied… "unfortunatly, I dont have either…"

If you can't reseed, I think you just have to ride it out. The nitrIte spike tends to last longer than the Ammonia spike. You might want to try some water changes to get yourself back on the card.

Ah, combining threads then.

Multiple water changes is the key when cycling with fish. Do as many water changes as you humanly can over the course of the cycle, to make things as comfortable for your fish as possible. You can't speed things up if you start from scratch... see if you can get a handful of gravel from an established and above all _healthy_ tank... a friend's tank, or even a _good_ LFS' tank will do.
