The unfortunate victim was the betta. If you are very sensitive and "gross out" easily, please stop reading right now. This thing took place over a year ago, but I still remember it clearly.

It all started with a white fungus stuff on the belly of my betta. No big deal! Just dunk it in a solution of Fungus Exterminator and wait for it to be gone. Yes, it did disappear, over a course of a week. Yet, there was a hole in the belly, clearly visible if you look at it carefully. Afraid of infection, the betta was still in the medicine.

Over the next few weeks, the "hole" became gradually larger. Soon a large portion of the abdomen was gone. Just like as if someone took a bite out of the fish  . It was awful! The betta became very lazy and hardly ate anything. Sometimes the betta bled. I saw a steady trickle of red blood flowing out of the hole and dissolving in the water. It bled several times. The betta looked in great agony that I thought it would be better off euthanized. But I had hope for the poor fish. I waited another week or so, as the end drew nearer and nearer...

...the hole became larger and larger, eating away at its flesh. No sign of fungus though. An invisible vermin eating away my betta. One day, the betta left Earth and went to fishy heaven. :sad I was distressed and so miserable; the fish has been my dear friend for over two years. I closely examined the corpse. The "hole" has almost eaten my fish in half. I could see the inside organs, the gills, and the flesh. No sign of fluffy fungus or any other thing. I was puzzled. I felt bad for the poor betta...how it has survived so long in pain and having its belly eaten away so gradually...

This has been a great mystery over the years. Any ideas on what it could be?

I still would like to know. Even today.

Thanks!

So sad to hear your story. I hope you did test your water as it may also indicate poor quality resulting in infections. If you haven't done yet, do a google search on betta diseases and you will find a lot of info on hollow abdomens.
Feel so sorry about your betta.

Wow. That is intense. Soundls like it could have been an internal parasite along with a skin/fin fungus. I think I would have euthanized the lil' bugger at the first sight of a bleeding adomenal hole...I hate to see them in pain! :sad

Does kind of sound like tuberculosis. Tuberculosis in fish is caused by a mycobacterial infection that can affect humans, too. Anyone treating a fish with wounds that look anything like that should be taking precautions against infection (gloves, etc.) and should be careful to avoid cross-contamination with other tanks via nets, gravel vacuums, etc.
