Breeding Feeder Goldfish

DON'T buy any more feeders. It will be eayser to breed guppies/mollys/ swordtails........guppies would be best if it were me. All you need to do is get the 55 set up and them put them in Get 1m/3f. They will do the rest. Just have a lot of hidding places for the fry b/c the parents will eat them if the can catch them.

I breed guppies for mine. Goldfish have a much hiogher percentage of fat and cartiledge from what I have read. I only have about 25 gallons of tanks right now for the guppies, but will be adding several more utility tanks this winter. if you plan to feed more than once a week you will want 30 or larger. I have had little or no problems at all with guppies eating their young. The guppies play hob with the baby snails though. and BTW I do reccomend raising pond and or ramshorns for your Oscar. easy to raise in the guppy tank (other than the high fatality rate of the baby snails). It is absolutely amazing to watch big cichlids hunt snails and they will love you for the treats. My set-up is high on filtration, and high maintenance, but trying to promote snail reproduction in an overstocked tank dictates a lot of maintenance to keep the water clean. with a larger set-up it would be much easier.

I haven't had a big issue with guppy fry being sucked up, but I run prefilter sponges on everything so that may be the answer. Sponge filters are the most common reccomendation for fry tanks, I just use Ac and Penguin
HOB's with the afore mentioned sponges on the intakes. I also use RFUG's with sponges on the intakes. I have an abundance of plants in my breeder tanks as well, the fry have a lot of things to munch on in the tank between the microorganisms all over the plants, the gunk in the sponges and the little bit of food the adults don't eat.

I also have a livebearer tank, It's 60 gallon with one biowheel 330 on it. I never have a problem and they replicate like mad. I suggest finding a petstore with some of those 4 inch mollies. Yea, 4-inch. They have the most young. Sometimes mollies of that size are hard to come by but you just have to look a bit.

goldfish make terrible feeders. the easiest in my opinion is mosquito fish. get a couple from your local vector dept. and toss them itno a tub outside with some water plants and you will have hundreds, not sure how well it will work in colder areas, but you can always use like a rubbermaid totebox and keep it in the house somewhere.
