cycling a tank!

What's your ammonia source? What all is in the tank?

Powerheads, and water movement, are good things.
 
not much in yet, just sand, salt water, and my equipment
thinking about cycling with shrimp, but if it begins to smell my girlfriend will kill me, and i have family visiting in a few weeks.

i could get some live rock from the ocean *glancing nervously around* to start some bacteria, but it wouldnt be much rock, (illeagle to import or collect "rock with life visibly attached"
l could get lots of live sand, should i do this before or after the cycle?
 
live sand will help speed up the cycle of your tank remember it has to level off then come down for the cycle and that can take a few weeks
