i got some live rock today and it has a "juliana's sea hare" they are not poisionous, people used to eat them here, and they eat ulva... anyone have any expirence with them? its about an inch long but wont grow much larger than 2 inches (so ive read), do they multiply uncontrolably?

im starting the cycle today and was wondering if i should keep the powerheads or protein skimmer running?

my instant Ocean hydrometer says my s.g. in my tank is 1.022 and the ocean here is 1.027 s.g. do you think my hydrometer accurate? should i raise my tanks s.g. to that of the ocean? (where i will be collecting probably all my fish).

On the hare--if you can provide it with food, that's awesome! These animals are ones that seldom can be kept because of their obligate diet. Wish I could offer more info, but you might want to check here: http://www.seaslugforum.net/species.htm if you can find the scientific name.

For cycling--powerheads, yes. Circulation is really important to the biological processes taking place, since it promotes the surface gas exchanges. Skimmer, depends. You can run it, but don't expect to see much scum during this time.

Hydrometers are often inaccurate. You shoul dbe able to have your LFS compare it to the readings from a refractometer (much more accurate) and see how far off it is. That value stays stable, for example, if it's off by -.003, it will pretty much always be off by -.003 and you can use it, just remembering to add that in each time.
 
my lfs isnt gunna have one, they hardly have any marine equipment, ei skimmers, hydrometers... so i have to order stuff like that online. theres a nicer lfs on the otherside of the island so maby il take it over there next time i go.

found another sea hare

It only eats ulva and doesnt produce an ink or toxin. i managed to go down to the ocean and collect some ulva for them to eat, ill look in the morning to see if any has been eaten

do you think they will survive the cycle? just tossed a couple of shrimp in today.
 
Picture me shrugging--I have no idea how hardy they are. I'll think good thoughts--and if it looks like they are stuggling, you can always do water changes to reduce the ammonia levels to something tolerable.
 
By the way, what color are yours? Looks like there is quite a bit of variety in color forms, with some being gorgeous!
