Had a pair of juvy Firemouths in a 10gal. tank with a pair of Convicts. All was well for the most part except for the occ. chase and temper tantrum.
I set up a 29 gal. I had, filled it up, let it run and dropped in a used filter from another tank and pulled a castle from the 10 gal. and put it in too for bacterial purposes. Let it run for 3 days. Water got cloudy and then cleared up. Did a water test and the results were: Amm. 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, pH 7.4 and temp. 80. The 10 gal was: Amm. 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 20, pH 7.4 and temp. 78. Alls well. Put the 2 Firemouths in my bucket with their water and added a cup of 29gal. water every 5 minutes or so for up to about 30 minutes.
I plopped them in and let them go. They looked about and explored their new that was Convict free. The next day I noticed the female was acting sluggish and looked as though she was gasping but she'd swim off after a bit. That afternoon she was couldn't hardly swim at all. Was up right but would sink slowly down until she bumped on the bottom. Would get sucked over the the filter pickup and then ease off when she hit it. Finally she just layed up against the glass then rolled over and that was it. I had to put her at ease.
I did a water check and all the numbers were the same as the day before. The male seems ok. Hides in the flower pot but he did that in the 10. Doesn't seem much different outside of being a tad nervous of new home. Still kinda new I guess.
Why would she just up and die like that after following the proceedures I did. With all the numbers right etc. Was it me, her or something I did. Want to know before I replace her.
