Well I just got a baby convict (well a small one). I introduced it correctly and well no it seems to be staying at the bottom ( from what I seen ). It isnt moving around in the aquarium much. I also added 3 pellets of food (thinking it'd be hungry). Well so far its still floating at the bottem but seems to have noticed the pellets but isnt moving towards them. Can the convict eat floating food? :S As well I have a small filter but it seems that it can easily push the fish (I noticed this when it ended up in the middle of the tank when it decided to uncontract its fins?).

Sorry Im really fancinated and just wondering everyones oppinion. Thanks! Also Im interested in everyone's convict and what experinces they have a had with it. Because I heard it was an intersing fish too watch.

Im also wondering if I can feed the convict normal worms you find everyday. Also I work in a seafood deparment in a grocery store and wondering If I could use cooked or raw shrimp as well?

How many pellets would be enough for one fish?

Also what do the convicts move (I doubt it'll be moving any of my ornaments). I heard they dig up gravel but is this only when they are breeding. I was thinking of adding some small rocks about 5cm high or so (little rocks), would the convict move these around or just leave them?

It also seems very shy to me, when i walk in the room it darts to the back of the tank. Im wondering I heard that you should change the water weekly but would it be better if I change it on friday (4 days from now), mainly because I heard it good to do this when a new fish is in a tank.

Lol, one other thing I was thinking of adding a floating plant (heard convicts like them), would a lilly pad work for this?

Yeh as you can tell im a bit excited, All responses appreciated! :D

well they pellets are at the bottem now, i think my fish is more interested in the little flakes or something it seems to eat.

it seems you have a lot to ask so I'll do my best. Most fish need a while to become familiar w/ thier surroundings. Like people, they all have thier own personalities. one might hide ALL THE TIME while some will be "more social". I've always fed flake, not pellets (just a preference, not a sugestion) so I cannot advise on that. As far as garden varriety worms, I would't do it myself but if you do let me know how it turns out. Raw is better than cooked food, but watching them hunt for live food is real fun (ghost shrimp are cheap at the lfs). My auratus moves all his rocks to suit his needs, every time we clean the gravel is level, by the next morning it is a maze of holes and hills. I don't do tank changes as frequently as suggested, especially w/ your small fishload, it's not neccessary. On that note, your fishload is mabey too small. depending on your tank size, you may want another vic (they will mate like rabbits) or something else to keep it company. this may cure him of his shyness, and if he is the only one in the tank for a long time he won't let anyone else move in (like my auratus, see below)

Alright for the tank issue I have a nicely 10 gallon setup. Ill post a pic lator if alot of people post in this thread. You are probably going to say "10 gallon is too small" obviously I have studied this and sadly admit its true. I talked to my LFS and they said I can easily trade my grown convict back and get a new fish for the same price. This way I can have chiclids ( I really wanted one) :D

Post a pic anyway. It will take more than one thread to be known here and it will establish yourself on the site. If all you have is one convict, mabey two it should be ok. My auratus has been in his 10g for 8 years. of course it might get bigger if given a bigger tank, but what fish in the wild can say "this stream/lake is too small, could you dig it out a little to make it bigger?" Or you can get a bigger tank and use the 10 for feeders/breeding/hospital/etc. really, this hobby can become quite addictive, i've found myself walking out of the fish store with a reciept for $100 when all I wanted was $1 worth of feeders. Have fun, and I'm sure if you go to the newbie forrum you can find someone who could benifit from your advise/experience (this will help boost your confidence as well) ;)

Alright my tank is posted below. The castle is hollow and I've already seen 'strippy' :D go inside it. I also add a roman gate stone thing thats off to the side. I am quite the gamer/computer nerd so I chose a fantasy kinda theme. I'm still looking for a background.

As for another. Could I add a female convict?

Hah yeh I know what you mean. I started well maybe because my gradfather has a 170g Salt water tank. But mostly because me and some other friends said we'd all buy a tank. So I got suckered into chiclids because the guy I work with in seafood said he had one. And he told me about so of the storys he's had and I was really facinated. I ended up buying.

1. 10gallon tank (included heater/filter, it was a kit).
2. 2 Glow in the dark plants
3. 1 Castle
4. Roman Gate
5. Green Gravel
6. $34 water test kit (amazing!)
7. Water de chlorination (bleh spelling)

I think thats about it, roughly $200 all together when all I really wanted to spend was $40 and a betta fish.
:dance :
