Well my 16 year old son had a close encounter and since this is copperhead country he smashed this little sucker the second he saw it, however once we actually looked at this baby we realized that none of us had ever seen one like it before so I took a picture to get id, and since this is the place for strange critters to be recognized by somebody, I figured I would ask you all here:

What the heck kind of snake is this thing? It was a between 1 1/2 to 2 feet long.

looks like an Eastern Hog-nose..... they primarily eat frogs, toads, and tadpoles.... I used to have one, called him Rocco :) Their defense is to flatten their necks out pretty much as a cobra might do and/or flip over and pretend it's dead with it's tongue sticking out and mouth opened......

he looks a little thin to me..... hasn't been eating so well perhaps...

nope this guy didn't do any of the defensive posturing mentioned in the stuff I looked up for eastern hog noses, and his nose wasn't turned up so I don't think that was this guy, besides not living in an area that is indiginous to them either and since I do not live in a highly populated area I would not think that it was somebody's escaped pet

This guy? I'd say it's either a juvenile black rat snake, or a gray rat snake. Common in most of the US, rat snakes come in a variety of regional variations. Most look like this guy as juveniles, and then change color as they mature. Elaphe obsoleta

im gonna agree with og on this one, but not completely.

It could also be an eastern fox snake.

do you live near water? Fox snakes are often confused for copperheads and even cottonmouths, they have a thick build because they're constrictors(much like your photo), they're avid swimmers, and have the same color pattern that your picture showed.
the prob with snakes (to those who dont study them, i suppose) is that many species look increadibly similar. Either way, it wasnt poisonous

:) Yep--my boss used to get most of the snake identification calls, and found they were always similar:

Boss Describe the snake, please
Caller Well, it's long, and skinny, and has scales. The head is bigger than the body and it doesn't have any legs. The tongue keeps flicking out, too.

Yep, that's a snake all right!

   you crack me up OG I would say that it probably was a rat snake, it surprised my son and since he was packing wood (4X4) the snake got shot on sight :thud: Can't say as I really blame him although my first inclination would have been to jump back and retreat :p

ahh to be 16 again and feel invincible

im 18

Nice pic!

It appears to be a one and one half, to two foot dead snake.
Could make good fertilizer for a hedge bed.. :D

Snake people! YEAH! Maybe one of you could identify a snake I saw years ago. I killed it because it was so aggressive and buried it. I never imagined that no one I talked to could identify it. Wish I had thought to take a pic.

Anyway, here's what it looked like:

Thin, about two and a half feet long.
Black body with yellow stripe down length.
Underbelly was aqua green. It met with the upper black color along the side of the snake. It was a wavy line where the two colors met.
The head was triangular and the mouth was white inside.
The snake reared up and struck at a small child (about 2 years old) who was running in my yard.

Thanks!
