Hello everyone,

I am new here and hope someone can help. I am not new to aquariums but haven't had one for several years and feel like a bit of an "antique". (They didn't have sinking pellets when I had an aquarium 25 years ago - no kidding !)

I have a new 32 gallon aquarium stocked with 4 swords, 4 platys and 3 Corys. My problem is feeding them. The sinking pellets are loved by ALL in the tank. I feed them at the same time and the platys/swords quickly eat the floating flakes and then make their way to the bottom to push away the Corys and eat the pellets.

I have read that feeding the Corys in the dark helps. Tried that last night. When I dropped the pellets in ( one pellet "cut" in 3) I heard a "splash" which I thought was the swords/platys going after the pellets.

Any advice is welcome......grayson

Maybe your not feeding your platy's enough. If you feed them just a bit more flakes than they'll eat, that'll be all right because the cory's will eat the sinking pellet and the leftover flakes. And that way maybe they'll be full and not bother the cory's food. That's just a suggestion. I have no experience w/ platys.

Thanks archangel. I hate to overfeed but hate to starve the Corys too.

Part of the problem is that the sinking pellets take a while to dissolve so they are in the water longer than the flakes. One platy was so fat (male - so pregancy wasn't an option) that I thought he might have dropsy. I noticed that after a few hours he was considerably smaller in the belly and knew it was food - not dropsy. He has also remained extremely heathly for a month and there is no evidence of Ich or fin rot etc. Anyway....I'm rambling.

Thanks again for the help....grayson

My platies are true food hogs. They live alone though so I give them what they need. I would continue to feed the cories at night after lights out. They will get more food that way.

The other option to to cut back on the flake food and use more pellet food.
