Does overfeeding mean what the fish are eating or what is left over? I feed my firemouth once in the morning and once at night. He seems to want more. I'm feeding flakes for now. Should I feed him more or should I stick with this regimen?

I wouldn't feed him any more unless he starts to look too thin. Fish aren't in the habit of rejecting food and will eat about as much as you give them. They really don't need much food, and feeding them too much can lead to their getting fat and can cause excess pollution in the tank.

You will get some differing opinions here, and mine might not be the best (I overfeed, guilty). How much per feed? How big is the fish? in the future try to give this info. a baby will need far less than a full grown. in general a pinch in the morn. and one at night is enough. if you have ANY left over in the tank; the fish is spitting food out; or "loosing" food thru its gills, you are overfeeding.

Well he looks pretty good not thin and not fat, so I guess I'll just feed him the same. Does anybody know a quality food for him? Right now I'm using Omega One- natural Protein formula- african cichlid flakes.

Sorry bout that. I just feed a pinch to my firemouth, day and night. He's about 3 1/2 in. I never see him spit any out or see it going through the gills, so I guess I'm doing ok.

Do a search, you can feed them human foods, if your fish is omnivorous (meat and vegtables) you can make food for him, outta gelatin, beef heart, squid, shrimp, and some veggies, like cucumber, lettuce, peas etc. puree it all up and add the unflavored gelatin to make a kinda paste, then spread it really thin on wax paper, and freeze it, then you can break little pieces off for him to eat. Its good to feed a variety of different foods.

For instance I feed my tank Flake, shrimp pellets, krill, brine shrimp, blood worms, algae wafers, feeder guppies and homeade food.

I feed my FM and other cichlids hikari cichlid pellets as a staple and then supplement with almost anything you can imagine as treats. The FM's are particularly fond of snails it seems. they also like any and every type of worm imaginable, and bottom feeder wafers. A good quality flake will suffice but mixing it up is always more fun for me.
