new 8L nano

Hey all. A week ago, I got an 8L (Korean? Chinese?) mono kit "Alife" - came with a hang-off the side filter, and no hood, but a cool compact fluorescent lamp that's made for the kit. I have 3 in of Eco-Complete in there plus a piece of driftwood from my other tank. I have a few plants in there and 2 neons that have been in there for 3 days. The ammonia + nitrite readings are still at 0! I know that the tank isn't cycled - of course not - but this makes me wonder, if I'm going to keep those ammonia levels at a minimum (in the interest of the fish...) what is the minimum the tank needs to start to cycle?
Thanks very much,
Misa

I have no clue what the system is you've bought but either way, it shouldn't matter. the neon's probably weren't the best choice to start an uncycled tank but you've already got them so there's no turning back now. It is very possible the driftwood was already covered in bacteria and there won't be a cycle. I don't know that there is a minimum ammonia level for a cycle to start. I would just keep an eye on things and if you don't see any ammonia or nitrite readings for another week, I would assume it's done. Nitrates will start to build once the bacteria have established themselves. the Nitrate readings could be hard to guage being some tapwater already has nitrates and your plants will use up nitrates but it might be something to watch anyway.
