I just bought some black silica sand from someone I know. He has 3 bags and didn't need it all, so I bought some for my 10g. It is new and unused.
I cleaned it well and noticed a slight smell of sulfur as soon as I wet the sand. The smell only intensified after putting it in the tank. Within 2 hours the room smelled. So I drained the tank and removed the sand.
Has anyone ever had this happen? I'm lost as to why it has this odor. I could see if it was sitting in the tank and developed a 'pocket' but this is brand new sand.
Any ideas? I'm assuming this sand is not usable. And I'm going to let the guy know that I bought it from since he has not used any of the bags yet.
