Strange cycling issue!

I believe I am nearing the end of the cycling process on my slightly bigger tank that I will be transferring my fish to (hopefully, one is very sick and I am hoping he pulls through but that is covered in another thread). I am getting some readings that are strange to me and am hoping to get some advice as to whether or not I should be doing something different....I don't want to ruin the cycle so I have to start all over...I really want to get my fish into the bigger tank before...well...lets just leave it at "before."

Currently, my readings are as follows:

pH - 7.0
dkH - 6degrees
ammonia - 2-4ppm (varies)
NitrItes - ~2ppm
NitrAtes - ~10ppm

Here is the weird part, ok, everything seemed cool, ammonia was pretty high, nitrites started and hovered at about 0.25, then went and hovered at about 0.50ppm. Then one beautiful day they spiked to 5ppm (or more). The ammonia started to go down everyday slowly but surely. I couldn't get the adding level right so it went all the way down to 0.50 but never down to 0. Since then, I got the add level right and the ammonia stays between 2 and 4ppm.

NitrItes continue to slowly decrease, HOWEVER, my nitrAtes aren't increasing. The current nitrAte level is ~10ppm, but a week ago, BEFORE the nitrIte spike, the level was at like 20ppm.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a problem here? Should I be doing something different? Please let me know, my fish desperately need to get into this tank!

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like everything is going OK. Just hold the course and before you know it, ammonia and nitrite will hit zero and you will be good to go.

As for the nitrate decreases, I chalk that up to inaccurate test results. These color matching tests aren't known to be the best in accuracy.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the reply! My wife just called me at work with the current readings from around 11am EST:

ammonia is between 1 and 2ppm
nitrItes ~ 0.50ppm
nitrAtes are between 5 and 10ppm

I thought about the test results being inaccurate...but I wasn't sure. So, with the readings above, what do you think? Should I just ignore the nitrAte readings and keep going forward? It looks like the cycle is just about done!

Let me know your thoughts, thanks!!
