:-P I'm in a pickle folks... I was thinking about heavily planting a tank and putting cardinal tetras and such in it. But now... I have been thinking about just stocking it with a tiretrack eel or two, or loaches, or something with personality. A carnivore of some sort that will chomp on things :D Any ideas?

It's a 33 gal long breeder tank so, 46" by 12"X12" pretty sure that's right
I have a high volume hang on back filter so it can handle high filtration needs.

I'm just not sure tetras will be exiting enough for me :P I was originally thinking about housing a freshwater american pike (jackfish the locals call it) then releasing it back to my lake after it started getting too big.

I'm planning on getting a 10 gal and making a little brackish tank for some bumblebee gobys they're so cute
(I've been bitten... I don't think i'm gonna make it guys... the aquarium bug...)

darn aquarium bug!

Well I for one would not recommend getting any fish from the wild, and then plan to return it to the wild when it outgrows your tank... no only would the fish maybe forget how to take care of itself in the wild, I'm pretty sure it's illegal.

I like the idea of some eels... a long tank for some long fish. How about some tire track eels, and then a nice school of zebra danios for the top? They are zippy fish and will love having all that room to zip around in.

Good luck filling your new tank!!

A tiretrack eel, an african butterfly, and a 5-7 cherry barbs? Lots of wood, with plants on the wood, and some floaters for the butterfly to hide in. The eel will rule the bootm, the butterfly the top, and the cherries in between for a flash of color and movement. Keep the water level down a bit so the butterfly is more visible. You'll want to let the barbs mature before adding the butterfly as well, since the babies might be a snack for him.

If its a heavily planted tank, I would HIGHLY suggest 1-2 Nandus Nandus, they are ambush predators and will hide out in the plants and attack smaller fish. And 1-2 Butis Butis, they are the same, in how they hide and wait for little fish, but they look different, and have VERY interesting behaviours...like they will swim upsideown under sword leaves waiting for prey.

I dunno about african butterflies, I had one and he was very boring and inactive. They are really pretty tho and the ones I have seen eat crickets. I love knife fish, I have a clown knife and used to have an African brown knife. They literally just suck the little fishies into their mouths which appear small but are really huge... the only thing is that clown knives usually get pretty big, mine hasnt yet, he is alone in a ten for now... but I have heard they get bigger... Browns usually stay around 6-8". Eels are really a good choice as well... Gotta love the aquarium bug! :)

I think my heart is set on a brackish setup with bumblebee gobies... i already have all the plants picked out and the driftwood sitting at home that i can use. I just need to find out if i should order all the plants and plant them and then start adding a little salt to the water to slowly bring it up to brackish while cycling it, or if i should cycle it fishless while it is brackish, and then try planting it. I just don't know if the plants can handle being put straight into brackish if they are not used to it...

Either way I think those bumblebee gobies have stolen my heart.

Upon further research and review. I have decided to setup a 10 gal with the bumblebee gobies. And let my freshwater tank continue cycling all the way through and go with Seaman's suggestions. I think that setup will serve to keep my interest a lot better than just gobies. And why not have your cake and eat it too? Setup both!!
