I'm trying to learn about planting one. I don't want to order a whole lot of plants without knowing what i'm doing and watch them all die. I'm setting up a new tank that has a filter already running for the past two weeks with some freshwater fish. I hope to end up with a brackish tank that is planted pretty heavily, with a sand/gravel mix as the substrate. Any ideas or guidance?

Depending on how brackish you're going, you can have several or no plants species. Indigo pointed out one site. Another would be Badmanstropicalfish.com. You may have better response posting your Brackish questions in the brackish forum.;)
Anubias, Vallisneria, Java fern will work to an extent. I don't know the cutoff salinity for each though Java fern seems to be the most tolerant of salt.
Good luck!
