I gather from reading here that tanks do not hold as much as they are advertised to hold. Here all along I thought my 55g tanks held 55g of water, less of course for substrate, wood, etc. But apparently a 55g tank is only 42g or some such. Is this correct, and why is this fiction still perpetuated?

Thanks,

Val

a 55 gallon tank usually is 48x13x20

They use 3/8" glass.

So the internal dimensions are around 47.25x12.25x19.62

Assuming your tank is absolutly all the way full, that would be about 50 gallons.

usually the water is kept about 3/4" to an inch down from the top of the tank, so thats about 45-47 gallons.
