Hey folks! this is my first "larger" tank after getting back in the hobby after about 5yrs.

I got this tank and stand for the princly sum of $75 from a co-worker. Got it up, running, and cycled now.

Specs:

aquaclear 500 filter (new version)
some kinda heater
air pump that creates bubbles

Fishes:
4 - Black nean tetras
3 - platys/swordtails
2 - clown loaches
2 - Dwarf guaramis
2 - south african blue rams
1 - 2" crayfish

and here's the pics:

whaddya think?

I really like your plants, as well as the wood- that sounds like one good deal you got your hands on!

Good looking setup...Was it cycled for bacteria? You don't mention.

Also--the crayfish is likely going to cause problems. They re-arrange decor, kill plants, and will snag a fish if they can. Neat critters, but not suitable for a community setup.

For cycling, here's what I did.

The new version of the aquaclear 500 comes with these ceramic "bio-something-or-others" That is supposed to help with bacteria.

I added 2 fish after just a few days, always checking the water. after a month or so, I slowly added more fish just one or two at a time. So for, ammonia and nitrites are not detected.

I did have a bit of algea before the last water change and cleaning though. Had some normal green stuff as well as some brownish. I think I was over feeding and leaving the light on too long. We'll see how it does now.

As far as the crayfish, I used to keep those with community fish in the past, and they can do alright.
As long as your keep them happily fed with sinking pellets, they leave the fish alone. As far as re-arranging decor, their are not too bad as long as there are plenty of nooks and crannies for him to hide in.
But, We'll see how it all goes.
