Strange Object. Please help id it.

I just noticed this object that has been built. It looks like a finger coming out of the live sand. It is made of sand and debris and seems to move with the water but stay fixed to the surface. The inside seems to be hollow and clear so I am thinking it is some kind of nest.

Can anyone tell me what it is or what kind of creature builds them.

Very nice pic!

A variety of worms will build these tubes. If you watch, you may see a fine thread float out, and wave around. The worm spins these out, thenpulls them back in and consumes any detritus that catches to the thread. Very normal, and a beneficial cleaner that also stirs up the substrate. Often called spaghetti worms.
