Schooling fish

Hi, this is my first post. Let me say these forums and this website have been very helpful over the past few months while getting my tank going. I had a question about getting some schooling fish. I would like to get some that won't get to big (2-3 inches), and with some color. And ofcourse that will get along with my mostly semi-aggressive tank. First here's my setup.

-55 gallon tank
-aquaclear 300 filter
-2 airstones (1 in each back corner)
-5 plants (1 live), driftwood, rocks and caves

Now the fish
-rainbow shark
-bala shark
-pictus cat
-upside down cat
-alge eater
-silver tip tetra
-2 red/black tetra's
-2 kuhuli loaches
-2 african dwarf frogs

I wouldn't mind some more silver tip tetra's if they would school, but I still want to hear other options . I think fish that swim in a "tight" school would be neat.

barbs are excellant schooling fish for the more agressive set-up. When I get a bigger tnk I am hoping to get a nice group of tiger barbs going.

I noticed that my tetras (three spot tetras) only school when they are scared (my hand cleaning the tank), other than that they were all over the place by themselves. I'm not sure if thats applicable to all tetras though.

Fish that are completley comfortable won't school. This doesn't apply in nature, but then there are many, many more fish and the school forms naturally. Fish in the aquarium will school tighter when frightened or stressed.

As for what kind of fish, I'd add to the tetras you already have since they are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 6 or more.

(I also have to suggest removing the dwarf frogs to their own little tank where they can be target fed....ok, its out of my system).

id agree with lep on the frog bit, and make sure they're african dwarf, and not african clawed, or you'll have a problem. Everyone points this out, but you'd be suprized how often a fish store will incorrectly stock a African clawed with the dwarfs.

Harlequin tetras look cool, and with that many fish im sure they'd school if you got a group of 6-10. Bleeding hearts also look really cool, but im unsure about schooling.

neons and cardinals are an obvious, but i dont think they'd do well with the bala

i would get more of the tetras you already have. Tetras should be in groups of six or more.
