Hi there!

I've heard that the min. tank size for a clown trigger is 55 gallons...I've also read 100 gallons, which seems to be more common.

Here is my situation: I would like one. Someday...maybe not soon, but someday.

I have a 40 gallon long that is open....it's basically the same size as a 55, but shorter. I also have a marineland tidepool 2 sump laying around...which would add some water volume. And I could add an extra sump as well.

So, if it would work....I'd like to have that trigger by itself in there.
Is that possible, or is 48" long & 12" deep not big enough?

Thanks,
Zeb

It would work for awhile but Clown Triggers will get close to 2 feet long. Their bare minimum tank size when adult is a 125 preferably larger. For your size tank (if you don't plan on upgrading) you might want to look into a Rectangular Huma or Huma, Bursa, or one of the smaller triggers. For that size tank you could even happily house an Undulated by itself. The "big bad boys" of the trigger world are the Queen, Blue line, and occasionally the Clown. Clowns are one of the most unpredicatle trigger. I currently have a 2 1/2 inch one and he got really mad when I added a Rusty angel to his tank (he already lives with a TR Huma, TR Neon Pseudo, TR Springeri Pseudo, Bangaii Cardinal and a Snowflake Eel). The Clown just locked both triggers and would chase only the angel away from his hole. Strange fish! Clowns are my favoritist saltwater fish....wait... make that any fish!

Clown Triggers are a favorite of mine as well. I have had two one small that I traded in for a larger one. Depending on if you had the capacity to upgrade at a later date to a large tank. (Min 125/150 gal.) Starting out with your present tank would work for a while, if you got a "small" size clown trigger. Triggers need and like rock to nibble on so some either base rock or live rock would be in order. If you wanted a larger size to start then a larger tank would be recommended. Also recommend would be to not add him until your tank had been up and running for awhile. The cost of this fish would warrent you to take your time and let your tank cure and settle down before adding a clown trigger. One of the most magnificent and colorful fish in saltwater a good choice for a FO or FOWLR tank........enjoy
