I just started my first fishless cycle, and i've heard that I can jumpstart the cycle by borrowing the filter cartridge from my existing tank. While the two filters are not the same, I believe that I will be able to fit the cartridge from the established tank into the filter of the new tank. Once cycling is complete tho, will I be able to change back to the appropriate filter cartridge in the new filter without messing up the bacterial colonies and therefore restarting my cycle??

Since my tank already had bacteria in the gravel and it's very understocked, I just took the entire cartridge out and plunked it into the tank. If you can't afford to do that, give the old media a good squeeze over the new media, and get some gravel vacuumings and pour them in the new tank. This should get you plenty of the bacteria you need to jumpstart your tank. Ever since I did that, all my nitrites are gone, and my ammonia has gone down even faster.

Hope it helps.
